City of Tyler announces free bulky item collection weeks
The City of Tyler Solid Waste Department and Keep Tyler Beautiful will sponsor the free pickups for residential customers.
TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Tyler residents will have a free bulky item collection week at the beginning of October.
The City of Tyler Solid Waste Department and Keep Tyler Beautiful are sponsoring a week of free bulky item collection for customers in the city starting Monday, Oct. 2.
“It just helps keep the city clean. People can get rid of their bulky items, and they don’t have to go to the landfill or pay for a special pickup. It’s just twice a year, Tyler Solid Waste and Keep Tyler Beautiful will take care of collecting the items for free,” says Leroy Sparrow, the city’s solid waste director.
According to a City of Tyler press release, those participating in this campaign with a Monday/Thursday collection day should have bulky items on the curb by 6 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, and no sooner than 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29. If your bulky items have not been collected by Monday, Oct. 9, customers can call the Solid Waste Office at (903) 531-1388 to place a work order.
Those participating in this campaign with a Tuesday/Friday collection day should have bulky items on the curb by 6 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, and no sooner than 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13. If your bulky items have not been collected by Monday, Oct. 23, customers can call the Solid Waste Office at (903) 531-1388 to place a work order.
Sparrow says splitting the job into two weeks will help with efficiency and allow his crew to have more time for the physical labor required to pickup the bulky items.
“We’re kind of separating Monday, Thursday and Tuesday, Friday, just so there’s a little bit more organization; items are not sitting out as long. This should really allow us to kind of finish the Monday, Thursday then start the Tuesday, Friday,” he says.
The press release noted that once bulky items have been collected from each street, any additional items placed on the curb will be charges a special pickup fee.
Bulky items to be picked up at no charge include furniture, appliances, carpet, fence material, old toys and other large items that would normally require a special fee. No liquid waste, tires, limbs, brush, tree stumps, or construction material will be picked up. Paint must be dried out with oil dry or kitty litter.
For those City of Tyler residential customers who cannot participate during this campaign, some bulky items are accepted for a fee during regular business hours at the City of Tyler Recycling Center, located at 418 N. Bois D’Arc Ave., or they may call the Solid Waste Office to schedule a special pickup.
