7 On Scene: Murder suspect Gustavo Zavala-Garcia in court for hearing
TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Accused murderer Gustavo Zavala-Garcia will be back in a Smith County Courtroom on Aug. 16. Zavala-Garcia was arrested and charged with the capital murder of Kayla Gomez-Orozco, age 10, in November 2016.

In this pretrial hearing, Judge Jack Skeen heard from DPS forensic expert Kristen Cossota via telephone. She said the first 24 samples being submitted for trace analysis have been completed. She said the final results on those samples will be ready in sixty days, or on about October 15.
Judge Skeen set the next pre-trial hearing for September 13. Then on October 18 there will be a pre-trial hearing for the final update on DNA testing. At that time it will be decided whether more DNA testing is needed.
The trial has been set for March 18, 2019.
Zavala-Garcia is accused of killing Kayla Gomez-Orozco in November 2016. After she went missing from a Bullard church, an extensive search was conducted. Her body was found in a well on Zavala-Garcia's property.
Zavala Garcia has been in the Smith County Jail awaiting trial for almost a year and a half. Some of that time was spent in solitary after he climbed onto a basketball goal and refused to come down.
